My sweet Jake.  He finished the summer swim team even though he would prefer to be doing just about anything else!  He was a trooper.

Danielle was the high point winner for her age group and broke 3 records, one of which was set in 1999 by a swimmer who went on to the Olympic trials.

Luke at the swim team banquet.  He thinks he can do the strokes and dive, too!

Danielle at Invitationals over the weekend.  A good start can make all the difference.

Danielle poolside where we spend a LOT of time.

The pool in Danielle's eye...

We finally finished up summer swim team and started Danielle's new year round team today.  The coaches have their eye on her and a plan in place.  Pretty exciting and a good challenge for her.  Jake and Allie are supportive of their big sister and the time swimming takes.  Sweet siblings!

As for me, trying to keep my running on the radar so I can attempt the marathon again and working on school prep for the year.  Danielle is in high school, Jake is starting middle school, Allie is starting 1st grade, and Luke is doing his therapy and soaking up anything he can.

4th of July

We got to spend the day with our friends, the Jordans, on Friday and were thrilled.  They came back for a visit from Arizona and we miss them so much!  It was so great to see them and catch up.  We didn't even let a little rain from the tropical depression keep us from playing in the pool.  All of the kids were so cute together.  Luke, who is much more observant than I even give him credit for, was so funny.  He kept trying to get on the top step of the pool and bend over and I couldn't figure out what in the world he was doing.  Because he still chokes easily and is not completely stable on his feet, Janet and I were sitting on either side of him.  He would climb to the top step just out of the water, turn and face the water, bend over at the waist, tuck his head down, put his hands up to his temples, and then jump (with us holding on to him).  We finally realized he was copying Danielle's swim team dives off the block.  It was adorable.  He was pretending to be adjusting his goggles (which were themselves pretend).  When we asked him what he was doing, he responded "wimming" (which is always accompanied by his arms moving like freestyle stroke arms)  Wish I had a picture of it.  It was so adorable.

Danielle had another swim meet at UT Saturday and Sunday where she shaved more time off in every event and qualified in one more for Senior Champs.  She's even closer to TAGS and is fractions of a second away...She's got senior champs next weekend and that's her last shot at long course TAGS.

Sunday we watched the fireworks with friends and then played cards until late.  It was fun and much needed.  I finally figured out how to do the longer exposures on my camera and got the kind of firework pictures I tried to take last year.  Yay!

The beautiful sky on 4th of July.

This one is blurry because I was too stubborn to use flash.  Thought jacking the ISO up would be enough, but alas...fuzzy picture.

Putting on his own glow stick.

I just love fireworks!

The finale begins.Love the stream of light.

miscellaneous update

Time is speeding by.  I can hardly believe it's July 1st already.

We've been incredibly busy with swim team and swim lessons this summer.  Danielle swims twice per day plus dry land plus she assists with swim lessons.  Jake is on summer league swim team and swims daily with meets on Saturdays.  Allie is taking swim lessons while Danielle teaches every day.  Luke gets to "wim" (as he says it) in the plastic baby pool they set up on the side during lessons.  He's so cute.  He moves his hands like the free style stroke when he says "wim" so that we'll know what he means.

Danielle has assisted with lessons last summer and this summer and will do her official training next summer to get to be a senior instructor and get paid to teach as well as training to be a lifeguard.  She has another meet at UT this weekend and is hoping to qualify for TAGS.  She's .3 seconds (yes, that's a decimal before the 3) away in the 50 free!!  She's been working hard, so we'll see what happens.  Then Senior Champs is next weekend in San Antonio.

Luke is making huge progress with his speech.  It's still not clear to someone who doesn't listen to him talk often, but he makes more and more sounds, is putting more and more words and sentences together, and is incredibly ingenious in describing what he's trying to say in non-verbal ways.  He's actually running now, not just walking, though both can be kind of shaky especially on uneven ground.  He took a really big tumble in our driveway a couple of days ago which left him kind of stunned--poor baby.

John is really liking his new job and that's a huge blessing.

I've been trying to get a few runs in here and there in the hopes of training again for the Austin marathon.  I would love to run for a time goal.  Not sure my ankle and knee are up for it just yet.  Wednesday I'm going to get my orthotic adjusted because I don't think I have enough correction.  In between running kids back and forth to and from the pool, I'm working hard to plan the upcoming school year.  Danielle will be in 10th grade, Jake in 6th, Allie in 1st, and Luke thinks he'd doing school, too.  Whew.  Thankfully, there should be no surgeries, procedures, or, hopefully, even dr appointments.

We're taking Jake off of his asthma meds again to see if he has outgrown his asthma.  I'm sure praying he has.  We'll see...

We get to spend the day tomorrow with our good friends, the Jordans, who are visiting from Arizona.  We miss them so much!!

God has sure blessed us with the things and opportunities in our lives and we are thankful!

Palo Alto meet in San Antonio.  It was a tough meet without a coach.  I was proud of Danielle for making the best of it and still shaving time off.

Luke's first little piano lesson with our music teacher, Mr. Kevin.  A little later he was climbing in and out of the toy basket and this is what I got!  Light is so beautiful, not to mention the kid himself.  No bias there!

Allie's skype playdate with her friend, Jubilee, who moved to Arizona.  It was a virutal tea party.  Pretty wild, huh?  Allie is showing Jubilee pizza and Jubilee is pretending to take bites.

My baby girl is 14 today.  She's turning into such a strong, beautiful young lady.  We went and got her hair trimmed and flat ironed.  It looks great straightened.

Surprises

Some like surprises and some just don't.  I'd say, generally, I don't.  Just don't usually like 'em.  BUT...after coming home from a long, tiring,  HOT swim meet all weekend I was very pleasantly surprised.  My wonderful husband was putting the finishing touches on a newly washed, vacuumed, waxed, armor-alled, fully gassed up, and freshly changed oil in my van.  I didn't know my  husband had ever even considered waxing my vehicle (this is definitely a first)...AND he had gone through his things to get them organized and put away.  AND he had even gotten me a card telling me how much he appreciates me.  Wow.  I could learn to like surprises!

Swim meet went well, but we were in a natatorium with no air conditioning and no air flow.  Miserable.  I took pictures of many a grandparent in that miserably un-dehumidified, HOT room in long pants cheering and taking pictures of their grandchildren.  Very sweet.

Mom is here this week to entertain children so I can make school plans.  Mothers are wonderful!

Swim practices pick up this week.  Swim team decisions have to be made this week.  Argh.

My friend Mary showed me how to make a pattern out of a skirt to make another skirt and I can't wait to break out my sewing machine.  The problem is I can't wait to edit photos, run and swim, do my school prep, etc etc...

Should be a good week.

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Today was a fun day.  Friends came over for lunch and the mom taught me how to "knock off" a pattern from a skirt so I can make another like it.  Very fun!  Now, finding the time to actually do it is whole nother story.

Danielle has another swim meet this weekend and for summer will be practicing a whole lot more.

Luke is attemping words without prompting.  Very cute.  I'm so proud of my boy.  I love how he points to himself and says "I" when he wants to do something himself or is answering a question by the rest of us.  We have a long way to go, but progress is progress.  Just thankful.

Allie is about to lose her 2nd tooth.

Jake is enjoying a little break from school, reading a lot, and avoiding swim team and piano practice anywhere he can!

As for me, I woke up with a "crick in the neck" even after my chiropractic adjustment last week.  It's nearly impossible to keep my head upright straight and definitely impossible to look down or to that one side.  Fun.  Hoping tomorrow is better.

Holy day

Ever have one of those days?  You know those dreams you have of going to work or school without your pants and  you're so thankful it's a dream?  You know how your mother always told you to wear only your best underwear?  Well...ever have one of those days/weeks where you're behind on everything, including laundry?  And you throw on those old holy underwear that you're not even exactly sure why you've kept. Because it's the only pair you have left...So you're thankful for them because it buys you a little time until you can get to the laundry that night.

Well, let me tell you about my day the other day and let me start by saying this was NOT a dream, no matter how much I wished it really were.  So I did have one of those days.  Yep, on went the ratty old holy underwear (which, I repeat...I'm not even sure why I still have them).  It was a day I was busy running from one appointment to the next and feeding children in between.
Went to the dentist.  Home with a numb mouth and all.  Check.
Went to get allergy shots.  Check.
Fed children.  Check.
Got Luke down for a nap.  Check.
Ran out the door to go to the chiropractor where I get a deep muscle massage first (by the way--it hurts but feels so much better later) and then he's able to adjust my spine.  Check.
Arrive in time.  Whew...Check.
Run to the bathroom because I've been running around all day and haven't had a chance.  Check...
Yep...there are the holy underwear.  Can you believe it?!!  I couldn't.  Talk about EMBARASSING.  Rachel, my deep muscle massage therapist, has to see my underwear to tuck the sheet out of the way to get to my back...oh yeah, she got a good laugh.  Good thing I can laugh at myself, too.  So...your mother really knew what she was talking about when she told you to wear only your best underwear!

I bet you really wanted to know that.  I'm sure I'll get a good laugh out of it soon!  Lemme tell ya....throw away those holy underwear if you have them stowed away in your drawer somewhere!  lol

Teeth

Allie lost  her first tooth this week.  She was very excited that the tooth fairy brought her a dollar.  I'm going to miss these days!  Can hardly believe she is 6 years old.

Spoons

Watching Luke eat is still something I cherish.

Senior Photo Shoot

This is what I've been spending my time on most recently.  My favs!  Love this stuff.  About to do some summer and fall school and activity planning.  Memorial Day weekend is approaching.  Hoping to plan, clean, and relax with our family.

wahoo

Made a whirlwind trip to New York last week to see John's parents and so glad we did.  We drove there and back over 4 very long days to have one day there.  The kids were awesome and didn't complain at all.  John's dad (Poppy) was literally waiting in the doorway at the nursing home when we arrived.  I'm so glad we went.  John's mom (Grammie) didn't fully know who I or the kids were.  I think she knew that she knew us, but didn't know quite how.  There were moments I think she knew, but most she did not.  Aunt Susan, Grammie, and the girls sifted through Grammie's jewelry and the girls got to pick some out to keep.  It meant a lot to all of them.  The kids got to see the home John grew up in, the schools he went to as a child, and the place where Poppy worked.  Utica is a beautiful, old, little city that at one time was proud.  It's pretty run down now and not growing.  The architecture of the buildings is something you don't see in today's modern buildings.

On the way up as we traveled through Arkansas and into Tennessee, we realized that there had been huge flooding going on.  We didn't check for things like that before we started out(lesson learned!).  As we neared Nashville, you could see just from the highway just how catastrophic things had gotten.  We saw an eighteen-wheeler down in a ravine that had clearly been covered over with flowing muddy water, cars all over the sides of the highway, people with gloves on searching, gas stations running out of gas, buildings and houses under water, rivers still overflowing their banks, and debris everywhere.  We had to stop for gas and the gas attendant told us the highway had opened only a few hours before we drove through after being closed for days.  The Cumberland River crested after we made our way over it the first time.  Wild.  Last I heard, 33 people died in this flood.  They can use a lot of prayer around there.

This was the same route my mom, sister-in-law Donna, and I made with Luke for his surgery in Cincinnati in August 2008.  It was kind of nostalgic.  The fact that we were driving through knowing Luke was healed and is a happy and healthy toddler now and that John has a job that he's so thrilled about waiting for him at home gave us a lot to be thankful for.  We drove right past the Cincinnati Children's Hospital and the little place we stayed...very sweet.  How different things are a year and 9 months later.

On the way back to Texas we stopped to see an old friend of John's in Ohio.  He has a beautiful home on a huge piece of land with horses, chickens, and lots of rolling green hills.  The kids LOVED it.  We completely forgot about Danielle's severe allergies to every grass, hay, and outdoor everything--especially HORSES.  She loved petting the horses.  Yeah...oops.  Thank God for Benadryl.  Thank goodness for allergy shots.  Despite a year and a half of allergy shots, there were still many hives, swollen face and eyes, etc.  So the quick 15 minute stop turned into a longer stay complete with a shower, change of clothes, and Benadryl.  Well, at least we know the shots are working as the reaction was way less severe than the last time we were around horses.

We arrived home late Friday night just before Mother's Day.  We were all wiped out.  Danielle had her end of the season swim team banquet Saturday.  We girls got to do a little shopping together with friends for the first time in a very long time.

This week we're trying to wrap up some school work so we can have a small summer break.  It's hard to get your head back into the swing after a week like last week.

Thank you, God, for the blessings of friends,  family, health, jobs, and resources in our lives!!

Hopeful

John has an interview Thursday morning for a job that he really wants. This one would put him back on his career path and it looks like a really good fit. I think he’s encouraged b/c they have already been conducting interviews and they were handed his resume by someone and are going to interview him this week before making a final decision. I have no idea what the other candidates’ qualifications are, but John’s “skill set” looks perfect according to the job description.

I’m PRAYING they hire him. They want the person who gets it to start May 6. Hopefully, he’ll be the one they hire!!

Thank you for any prayers!

Thankful

So tired.  It's the season, I know, but it's so important to be out there in the mission field.  I'd love to be out there doing more outside of our home.  I keep "shoulding" myself and the only thing that accomplishes is just making me feel guilty for not doing enough.  Yet there are only 24 hours in a day.  That's it.  There is also only so much energy to go around.  Maybe my main mission field is our home and family for this season.  It's been quite the season these last few years.

With John getting laid off on Thursday, I'm amazed at another way God is showing Himself.  Danielle's coach is personally paying for her long course swim team fees for the summer.  I'm blown away.  She said some wonderful things about Danielle and that she had someone do something similar for her when she was growing up.  Danielle will serve as an assistant swim lesson teacher for the summer to help do her part.  I'm humbled and thankful...again.

Luke is so cute as he attempts to make the sounds we model for him.  While we were at a doctor appt today he attempted to say the word "stop."  He usually gets the last part ("op").  He very slowly made a not so perfect "s" and after a pause finished the word.  All of us were cheering!  His newest word is "no."  He is vocalizing that word clearly and loudly and often!  I'm thankful every day.

Speaking of Luke, someone is anonymously sending us contributions for Luke's Carepage memory book.  They are going to the trouble to type the address and what it's for so that we may not know who is sending it.  Again, I'm  humbled.  It has been a reminder that we're not alone.  We are a bigger community supporting each other.  I look forward to the day that we get to pay it forward.

I recently saw pictures of a trip to Kenya on a blog that really moved the kids and me.  I hope once John is working again that we can sponsor a child.  I was blown away seeing how these people literally live on a garbage heap.  There was a picture of a boy peering into the window of a school.  What a privilege we have to be able to be educated.

I thank God for the reminders that we are not alone.  He is bigger than any of our circumstances and we are in community to help show each other God's love.

Bluebonnets

Traditional Texas Bluebonnet pictures.  Getting 4 active children to all look the same direction with eyes open much less a smile...it was an adventure!  Would've loved to compose it differently, but glad to get it!

Danielle Hope--13

Allie--6

Jake--11

Luke--2

For our out of town family, these are Texas Bluebonnets.

Buzzing bee--Jake pointed out that it had a pollen sac.  That's just like him!  I just liked the way the light hit her (Jake informed me that she's a female, too!) wings.

School actually went like it should today.  Amazing the things that can happen when there are clear expectations and consequences!
